Romantic Engagement Session in Rancho Peñasquitos | Karina + Max

Karina and Max standing together on a trail during their Rancho Peñasquitos engagement session in San Diego

Some couples just feel like they’ve known each other forever, and that’s exactly what Karina and Max’s story carries. As a San Diego engagement photographer, these are the kinds of stories I love getting to tell through images, relationships rooted in friendship, ease, and the kind of connection that feels deeply familiar.

Although they had been friends of friends for years, their relationship really began when they found each other on social media four years ago and realized how much they had in common. What started as familiarity quickly became something deeper, built on humor, honesty, and the kind of open communication that makes a relationship feel safe.

That ease between them was felt throughout their Rancho Peñasquitos engagement session. There was no pressure to be anything other than themselves, just quiet laughter, natural conversation, and the comfort that comes from being with someone who truly knows you.

Their Proposal Story

One of my favorite parts of getting to know Karina and Max was hearing how he proposed.

Because Valentine’s Day and Karina’s birthday are so close together, they planned to celebrate the day before her birthday with dinner at Bali Hai. Afterward, Max suggested they stop by J Street Marina Park, a place that already held meaning for them because it was where they had their first date.

As they sat together on a bench by the water, he pulled out a crystal globe terrarium lit with tiny lights, with the ring placed in the center. He had hidden it inside the jacket he casually carried with him all evening.

Of course, there were tears. The kind that come when a moment feels both surprising and somehow exactly right.

Knowing this part of their story made photographing them feel even more meaningful because their connection is built on shared history, comfort, and choosing each other again and again.

Why This Rancho Peñasquitos Engagement Session Felt So True to Them

For their Rancho Peñasquitos engagement session, we chose this location because it gave them the space to simply be together.

The open hills and soft sunset light created such a peaceful atmosphere, which matched the grounded way they move through the world as a couple: friendly, funny, a little shy at first, but deeply connected once they settle in.

Their black outfits worked beautifully against the golden hills, adding just enough contrast to make the images feel timeless without ever pulling focus from their connection. It felt like an extension of who they already are, comfortable, confident, and fully themselves.

For couples wanting a naturally romantic location in San Diego, the trails and rolling hills around the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve make this such a beautiful setting for engagement photos.

If you’re dreaming up your own session, I love sharing favorite locations, meaningful love stories, and inspiration throughout my recent engagement blog posts. You can view those posts here.

A Session Rooted in Individuality and Togetherness

Something they told me that I loved was how important it was to each of them to walk away with individual portraits as well as photos together.

There was something so beautiful in that. The understanding that partnership is built not just on togetherness, but on honoring each person’s individuality too.

That emotional maturity shows up so naturally in the way they interact, giving each other space, meeting each other with ease, and still always finding their way back into connection.

For couples preparing for their own session, I always encourage thinking about the moments and portraits that matter most to you. My engagement session prep guide is such a helpful place to begin if you want your gallery to feel deeply personal.
